Recycling and Green Gardening

April 9, 2008 at 3:14 pm (Recycling, indoor sowing, seedlings) ()

Having just started gardening this year I don\t have a lot of equipment. I don’t have grow lights or a ton of pots or shovels.

This posed a bit of a problem for indoor sowing. What do I put the seeds in? I decided that instead of buying a ton of peat pots that I’d only be able to use for one growing season I would recycle containers as much as I could. So I’ve been using milk cartons that have been washed out, cleaned, and cut in half to plant my seedlings. I also have a friend saving hers for me. I’ve also been using plastic food containers, like apple sauce and Jello for sowing seeds in and bigger ones like margarine containers to but bigger seedlings in. I’ve also been using plastic beer cups to put bigger plants in. Although they were new when I first used them, i plan on using them year after year.

I’ve also been reusing the cardboard trays that water bottles come in. I cover them in garbage bags so that they\re waterproof (I can cover 4 or 5 trays from one large garbage bag if I cut them out properly) and I can put all the containers with plants in them. If I had to carry the pots around individually it would take forever.

What recycling tips do you have for your garden?

Recycling is amazing. I love reusing stuff. You can plant seeds in egg shells filled with peat. I’ve tried it and it worked. They germinate fine inside. Make sure you make a whole at the bottom of each egg shell half as drainage for any excess water to pass through.
